3rd Forensic Linguistics Short Course

We invite students (Bachelor’s and Master’s) as well as graduate students and postdocs from Linguistics (and its sub-disciplines), Phonetics and Phonology, Law/Legal Studies, and related fields to apply for this international interdisciplinary program. All sessions will be conducted in English.

The exact date of the 3rd FLsc will be available in due course.

Currently, applications are closed. They will open in January 2020 and stay open to March 1, 2020 (10.00pm, GMT+1).
Notifications of acceptance will be sent between mid of March and Mid of April. Notifications of rejection will be sent sent in mid of April.

The FLsc is taught by Dr Isabel Picornell and Dr Ria Perkins.

Workshop: Statistics for Linguistics

For the first time, a workshop in statistics for linguistics will take place directly after the 3rd FLsc. Participants of the 3rd FLsc are welcome to participate, however, participation is not mandatory and does not influence your chances of participating in the FLsc itself.

The workshop will introduce general ideas and methods of statistics. Topics discussed include the importance of statistical methods to science in general and more specifically linguistics, descriptive statistics, e.g. data visualization and measures of central tendencies, and inferential statistical methods, e.g. linear regression and linear mixed effects models. In the applied half of this course, participants will use R, a free software environment for statistical computing, and RStudio in hands-on exercises covering all theoretical aspects under discussion. Previous knowledge of statistics or the R programming language is not required.

The workshop “Statistics for Linguistics” is taught by Dominic Schmitz.

Payment Modalities

Deadline for fee payment is 01 July 2020. If you cannot afford to pay the total fee at once, please contact the coordination team for payment by installments. Payment will be done via wire transfer. The FLsc fee covers lunches, excursions as well as snacks and beverages during the summer school. The workshop fee covers lunches, as well as snacks and beverages during the workshop.

If you cannot attend the summer school and/or the workshop, you may cancel your visit until 21 July 2020. Up until this deadline, no fee has to be paid. However, if you cancel afterwards or do not show up, you are expected to pay the full fee.
